The history of the productTHE SPRINGBOKS
THE SYMBOL OF RUGBY, AND OF ALL THE COUNTRY!
The nickname “The Springboks” was adopted in 1906 during the first international tournament for South Africa’s rugby team. The Springbok, an antelope agile and fast, perfectly symbolises the qualities that the team wished to embody: speed, agility and endurance. This symbol has become a key element in the South African national identity.
During the apartheid era, rugby and symbolic Springbok were associated with the white minority, but the historical team world victory in 1995 marked a change. Mandela, wearing the Springbok jersey, used the symbol to promote national reconciliation. Since then, the Springbok represents not only sporting excellence, but also the unity and transformation of South Africa.
