WILHELMINE, THE REAL "LITTLE QUEEN" ON A BIKE!
"Little Queen" is a well-known French periphrase for cycling. We hear it everywhere. But how did it appear? There are many theories on the subject, but the most widely accepted involves Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.
Ascended to the throne at the age of 10 in 1890, the queen was an avid cyclist, to the point of not hesitating to saddle up to get around the kingdom. On a diplomatic visit to Paris in 1898, journalists were captivated by the young queen riding her bicycle around Paris, and began calling her "The Little Queen".
With a queen like that, it's hardly surprising that the Netherlands is the "land of the little queen".
