THE RED JERSEY OF THE FRENCH RUGBY TEAM 1958!
The red jersey of the French rugby team, though little known to the general public, is one of those small curiosities that punctuate the history of French rugby. It was only worn five times.
The first appearance of the red jersey dates back to March 9, 1958, in Colombes, during a match against Australia. This game ended in a victory for the French team, 19-0. A first success in this jersey, which remains to this day the most memorable. However, the red jersey never had the chance to establish itself over time, and its history remains relatively unknown.
The red jersey reappeared in 1959 against Scotland, then in 1961 against Italy. However, these matches did not leave such a lasting impression on rugby history, and the red jersey soon disappeared from the field.
It was not until 2015 that the jersey made a comeback during the Six Nations Championship. This time, France wore it against Scotland and secured a victory, before using it one last time at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in Twickenham against Italy. These final appearances gave the red jersey renewed visibility. Today, with this jersey inspired by the 1958 model, the red jersey finds its place in history once again. It is an opportunity to rediscover a little-known part of French rugby heritage.
