Even if the English term "sport" only appeared in the 19th century, derived from the Old French desport (entertainment), many activities involving physical effort under specific rules already existed long before.
Today, we all think of the famous games of ancient Greece, from which we have inherited the image of the perfect male athletic body. With his muscles bulging, oiled and, above all, naked, this "God of the stadium" once represented the ideal of the Greek citizen. The Greek word for nudity is "gymnos", which gave rise to the French word "gymnastique".
