Matthew Webb will go down in history as the first man to swim the English Channel in 21 hours and 45 minutes. This achievement on the 25th of August 1875 contributed to the development of the sport. The first half of the 20th century saw the emergence of crossings of rivers, ponds and inlets all over the world, attracting crowds and the press along the banks. Paris was a pioneer, organizing a 12km crossing of the Seine between 1905 and 1944 that attracted more than 50,000 people.
