The history of the productMARATHON WOMAN 1967

Let’s have a thought for Kathrine Switzer, an icon for the women runners

Kathrine Switzer, after having been (in 1967) the first woman to run the Boston marathon with a registered race number. The rules of the Boston marathon did not explicitly forbid participation of women.

Kathrine registered together with her trainer using her first name initials, K.V. During the race, she was encouraged by the other runners. Despite her look, her makeup, her lipstick and her headband together with her running equipment, she was allowed to start the race next to her trainer and her boyfriend, a hammer throw athlete.

Towards the 6th kilometer, journalists and organizers noticed her. The race director tried to get her out of the race. She received help from her trainer who asked to let her continue and also by her boyfriend who pushed the director to the side of the road.

She was able to reach the finish line within 4 hours and 20 minutes. Photographs from the incident were displayed on front pages of newspapers around the world. Time has gone by since then and the race director and the marathon runner have grown closer and become good friends.
